This week all our Primary pupils have been busy learning about different features and types of poems as part of our Eco week focus. These poems will be collected, read and reviewed by our teachers and Senior Leadership Team before submitting our favourite poems into the COBIS Writing competition.
Year 1 have been very excited to learn all about worms; so much so they decided to design and make a class wormery. The children went out to the eco garden to dig for worms during their Science lesson and managed to find a few little ones. Year 1 have been so inspired by these worms they decided to write their own poems about worms using adjectives, nouns, verbs and rhyming words.
Year 2 have been learning how to compose acrostic poems about the weather and linked it to designing their own Eco-garden. In Maths they have been consolidating their knowledge of time and number.
Year 3 have been drafting eloquent cinquains (five line poems) as part of the Eco week poetry project. They have also begun their Stone Age topic, considering what life would have been like during this period and asking questions about the Stone Age to drive the topic forward.
Year 4 have been thinking about the reasons and the differing opinions for deforestation. Considering how they can make an impact, they ventured into our eco-garden, thinking about what they like and how they could change it; then creating their own eco-garden designs. Linked with the theme of sustainability, Year 4 have been busy creating a range of poems including kennings, limericks and haikus on deforestation.
Year 5 have been learning about, writing and performing their own slam poetry with an eco-theme. In Maths, they have been playing various exciting place value games which the children thoroughly enjoyed. Science lessons have seen the children continue to explore our solar system, investigating the evidence which shows that earth is a spherical body.
Year 6 have explored the importance of repetition to poetry whether it be through repeated vowel sounds, alliteration, rhyme or repeated phrases, which they are now trying to include in their own poems about global greening. Year 6 have also been exploring strategies for converting imperial units of measure to metric amounts using multiplication, division and place value. It has been wonderfully encouraging to see how far their mathematical reasoning has progressed since the beginning of the academic year.
