Art and Design goes beyond the practical and the academic. Art is a complicated subject that is vital for adding cultured enrichment and creative fulfilment into our lives. No other living creatures on this planet create for purposes other than what’s practical for them. A bird can tweet a song, but it does so to mark its territory and attract mates. A spider can spin a beautiful web, but only to capture its prey. What sets us humans apart from other animals is that we can make art — something that has nothing to do with survival and everything to do with living. We are privileged to be able to think creativity, to see the world for its beauty. As such we need to encourage our secondary children to help interpret as well as contribute towards the development our modern world.
To best support this invaluable development, it’s important to engage children in art – both at home and at school – and to continue with their creative experience throughout their schooling. The British curriculum understands that Art is a subject provides opportunities for our secondary learners to experience and respond to world through their own experiences. By constantly educating ourselves about the evolving nature of art, the more fulfilled we will be and the more appreciation, as adults, they will have of our environment.
Like with any skill, continuing to learn and hone that skill gives you confidence in your abilities, increases competency, and generates greater results over time. Building up your own artistic skills and widening your array of options is a way you can contribute to your own future in a positive and constructive way.
To mold your artistic skill further, you should be willing to push yourself beyond your zone of comfort. Often, what improving artists will do to regiment their continued learning is to build a routine for themselves which commits them to stretch their known skills.
At the Britanncia art studio we realise the importance of enjoying art outside of the information-based subjects. By educating our children on new forms of art or practicing and understanding of crafts, art and design can be a form of therapy, personal development, and self-care. That’s why we considered art to be one of the most important subjects on our students timetable.
