This year at Britannica, the ICT department has become the Computing department, but why?
Information Communication Technology (or ICT) covers how we are able to use technology in a way that allows us to work together. This is very important in the digital age where almost every job requires proficient use of computers, mobile phones and more. However, Computing also encompasses the areas of Computer Science (knowing how computers are able to do all of these amazing things) and Digital Literacy (being able to use these devices to create artefacts and projects).
In our first term of Computing, students in years 6-9 have expanded their knowledge through two units. The first of these units was Communication and Hardware, where we looked at how computers form networks, run their programs and even how these programs can be dangerous if we don’t protect our devices. Activities included working together to create PowerPoint presentations and designing computer safety posters.
The second unit was Media which has given students the opportunity to discover how computers and creativity blend together. We’ve made documentaries about the school, redesigned the school building, created theme park logos and even animated some snowmen! I look forward to displaying some of this amazing work in the new year.
This week is Computer Science Education Week and as a result, there are many activities available online if your child (or even yourself) wants to learn some new skills. Check code.org scratch.mit.edu or hourofcode.com to get involved!
