As we continue our journey through the academic year, we are excited to share our focus on achieving fluency and mastering mathematical concepts at Britannica International School Shanghai.

Our goal is to ensure that every student develops a deep understanding of mathematics, which will provide a solid foundation as they progress through their school career and into future learning.

Maths Tutorial

In the Primary department at Britannica, we follow the White Rose Education Mathematical curriculum. By following this curriculum, teachers at Britannica are able to deliver highly effective Maths lessons that cover Pictorial, Concrete and Abstract problems which help us provide a progression of mathematical fluency and mastery in the subject.

The Importance of Fluency

Mathematical fluency refers to the ability to perform calculations quickly and accurately. Through repetition of core topics, teachers at Britannica are providing the students opportunities to increase their recall speed on arithmetic questions. Methods such as using the “Flashback 4” starter tasks, number bond practice and specific Maths recall games are supporting students to mentally recall mathematical problems at speed.

As a result, the different teaching techniques helps provide the students with flexibility with the methods they use. They are continually adding to their mathematical tool belt where they can select the best method for the operation. Consequently, the students’ confidence in the subject vastly increases, resulting in an increased love for Maths.

What is Mastery in Mathematics?

Mathematics mastery is about more than just getting the right answer. It involves understanding concepts by grasping underlying principles rather than just memorising procedures. Teachers allow students to start thinking critically to develop problem-solving skills that encourage logical reasoning and creativity. Thus, learners can then apply knowledge to real world situations going forward.

Our Approach at Britannica

  • Engaging Differentiated Curriculum: Although we follow the White Rose Education curriculum that emphasizes problem-based learning, allowing students to explore and discover mathematical concepts in a supportive environment, teachers also provide bespoke lessons to meet the needs of all learners in the class.
  • Regular Assessments: Frequent assessments help us gauge individual progress, adapt our teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs and measure the value added to each student.
  • Collaborative Learning: Students have ample opportunity to develop their Maths oracy skills in class by discussing problem solving techniques, the methods they used and opportunities to improve.
  • Technology Integration: We utilise digital tools and resources to reinforce concepts and provide interactive learning experiences.

Tips for Parents

  • Encourage Daily Multiplication Practice: Set aside time for your child to practice multiplication. This is the key to a range of Maths topics. With multiplication and division mastered, students will become increasingly successful in other mathematical topics.
  • Make it Fun: Incorporate math games and puzzles into family activities.
  • Connect Math to Real Life: Show your child how math applies to everyday situations such as timing, cooking or budgeting.
