This week at Britannica, we celebrated STEM Week, immersing our Early Years students in the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. These subjects are vital for young children as they foster critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, laying a solid foundation for future learning and encouraging curiosity about their surroundings.
Our classrooms buzzed with activity as children engaged in hands-on projects. Pre-Nursery and Nursery explored a pirate theme, conducting fun experiments with floating and sinking. They crafted their own boats and tested various classroom objects, discovering which would float or sink. The highlight was making unique pirate vessels, which they joyfully set afloat—an excellent hands-on learning experience! The children also got to practice their culinary skills by creating a delicious pirate-themed snack.
Reception joined the fun with kite-themed STEM activities. Inspired by the story Stuck by Oliver Jeffers, the children designed their kites, created a 'nature' kite from collected leaves, and discussed wind direction by observing school flags. They built kites from recyclable materials, explored symmetry and shapes, and engaged in Storytime Engineering, brainstorming and constructing kites. Additionally, they experimented with paper clips to see how different weights affected flight.
It has been a week filled with learning, creativity, and imagination.
