Year 3 is an exciting time for students at Britannica International School, as they embark on a journey of fostering independence and curiosity. This year serves as a foundation for students to enhance their skills while engaging in a variety of subjects that encourage exploration and creativity.
English
In English, our students are set to advance their writing abilities by concentrating on enriching their descriptions with detailed noun phrases and learning to extend their sentences using conjunctions. Building upon their earlier work with creative fables through the Talk for Writing approach developed by Pie Corbett, we have transitioned to a new focus: Non-Fiction, specifically Non-Chronological reports that relate to our thematic study of Europe. As the year unfolds, students will also explore various writing formats, including persuasive pieces and newspaper articles, equipping them with essential communication skills.
Mathematics
At Britannica International School, we follow the UK Curriculum with a strong emphasis on mastery, utilising the White Rose Maths approach. In Year 3, lessons are designed around the Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract framework to help students achieve a profound understanding of mathematical concepts. There is a particular emphasis on reasoning and problem-solving, allowing students to develop their verbal reasoning skills. They will apply these skills in written form as they tackle questions, fostering a robust mathematical mindset.
Science
Our Year 3 learners thrive in their Science classes, where they become mini-scientists through hands-on experiments and investigations, often conducted outdoors. After an engaging exploration of Rocks and Soils, the students have embarked on an exciting new unit on Light. They have been investigating the properties of light and observing how shadows change by using both natural and artificial light sources. By learning key scientific vocabulary such as opaque, translucent, and transparent, students can articulate their findings effectively. As we look ahead, the upcoming unit on Magnets and Forces promises to be another thrilling exploration!
ICT Integration
In Year 3, students are taught the importance of staying safe online and they develop their typing skills while working with a variety of programmes to present their work. They learn how to research effectively, identifying safe sites and understanding keyword usage. ICT is woven throughout the curriculum, whether students are publishing their English stories, creating presentations in Science, or consolidating maths skills. This year is an excellent opportunity for students to discover how technology can enhance their learning experience.
Topic Work
This year, we began our Topic studies by delving into one of the earliest periods of human history: the Stone Age. Students engaged in hands-on activities such as cave painting, outdoor hand-axe carving, and spear-making, fostering a deeper understanding of early human life and their evolution into Homo sapiens. As the term progresses, we shift our focus to Europe, examining mountain ranges, rivers, and both human-made and natural landmarks. English lessons are integrated with this Topic work, allowing students to research a European city and compile a non-chronological report on their chosen country, as well as create a brochure for a capital city they wish to visit. To enhance their learning experience, we have organised a Spanish Food and Culture Trip, beginning with the animated Disney film Coco, which introduces South American culture. Following the film, students will visit the Macarena restaurant for a delightful tasting of traditional Spanish tapas and enjoy a guided tour of the restaurant, exploring its unique decor and art.
Year 3 is an enriching year for our students, as they cultivate independence and foster curiosity across all subjects. This journey not only promotes academic growth but also supports their social and emotional development, helping them become confident learners. We are eager to celebrate their achievements and guide them as they continue to explore new ideas and experiences, laying a strong foundation for their future educational adventures.
