Year 5 is a significant year in the National Curriculum, where students refine their skills and knowledge in preparation for the transition to Key Stage 3. This year is essential for fostering independence, critical thinking, and creativity. The curriculum emphasises a balanced approach, integrating core subjects such as English and Mathematics with enriching topics in Science, History, Geography, and the Arts, equipping students with the tools they need for future learning.
English
English lessons in Year 5 at Britannica are incredibly engaging and enjoyable, featuring interactive activities, captivating books, creative writing, games, and group discussions that ignite imagination and enrich learning! So far this year, we have offered students a variety of focused learning experiences through the ‘Mr. Men and Little Miss’ series, as well as recounts, non-chronological reports ‘The Sneaglegator’, and poetry.
As we conclude our Spring term, we are thrilled to have dived into the enchanting module of faraway fiction, starting with the beloved tale “Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters” by John Steptoe. This text allowed us to explore a rich tapestry of imagery and symbolism. The students immersed themselves in character analysis, examining how sophisticated vocabulary can enhance descriptions and evoke strong emotions in readers. In class, students had the opportunity to plan, edit, draft, and illustrate their own versions of the story, selecting various African locations, settings, climates, and descriptive elements to create narratives that are both compelling and factually accurate. These creations have been wonderful to read and we know that children have made a lot of progress as a result of this topic.
Maths
At Britannica International School Shanghai, Year 5 mathematics education is instrumental in preparing students for the challenges of Year 6, particularly through the implementation of the White Rose Maths curriculum. This curriculum emphasise a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, encouraging students to develop their skills in areas such as fractions, decimals, and geometry. By fostering critical thinking, students learn to approach problems analytically, making connections between different mathematical ideas and applying their knowledge in various contexts. The focus on reasoning and problem-solving not only enhances their mathematical fluency but also builds their confidence, equipping them with the tools necessary for success in Year 6 and beyond.
Science
Year 5 Science seamlessly blends practical experiments with engaging written work, creating an enriching learning environment. Students thrive during hands-on activities, where they can explore scientific concepts while also reflecting on detailed explanations and discovering fascinating new facts. One of our topics this term has been space which proved to be incredibly captivating, allowing students to delve into the sun, planets, the moon, the cycle of day and night, and the intricacies of time zones. They collaborated effectively and made insightful use of their own devices for research and investigations. We are excited to embark on our next topic—forces—where we anticipate further exploration and discovery!
ICT Integration
In Year 5, our students thrive in a technology-rich environment, embracing our 'Bring Your Own Device' policy with enthusiasm. We prioritise safe, responsible, and sensible computer use, integrating ICT seamlessly across the curriculum. From crafting creative narratives using online literature programs to mastering multiplication and division facts through engaging online games, technology enhances our learning experience.
Our students leverage digital tools such as online dictionaries and thesauri, and we're excited to incorporate Artificial Intelligence (AI) in innovative ways. This enables them to explore, research, and learn at their own pace, while also fostering collaboration and sharing of knowledge. They can pose questions, discover new resources, and make progress with ease.
To facilitate learning and communication, we utilise Microsoft TEAMS to share guided reading materials, comprehensions, and homework assignments. Additionally, we've introduced Century Tech, an AI-powered online platform that provides personalised learning pathways. This cutting-edge technology helps our students stay engaged, motivated, and supported throughout their educational journey. In Year 5, ICT is woven into every aspect of our learning, and our students are reaping the benefits. With access to a wealth of digital resources and tools, they're developing essential skills, building confidence, and having fun while doing it. We're proud to see our students flourish in this dynamic and interactive learning environment, and we're excited to see the incredible things they'll achieve!
Year 5 has been a year of innovation and discovery for our students. They have made considerable advancements academically and personally, preparing them for the challenges of Year 6 and beyond. We look forward to celebrating their achievements and supporting their continued growth!
