Book Week 2017 – Where will Reading Take You? Britannica is already abuzz with reading fever! With only a few short weeks away from our annual Book Week, pupils and staff are already beginning to get excited about where this year’s celebration will take us.

Book Week 2017 will take place from the 13th – 17th March and this year the theme is all about adventure and travel. It will be an opportunity to celebrate and share our love of reading across Britannica. Throughout the week there will be lots of different activities taking place, such as dressing up, reading with teachers and other pupils, games and much more.

Classes will be involved in a myriad of reading-themed activities throughout the week, including a classroom decorating competition, a book fair, Character Dress Up Day and much more! Key Stage 1 classes will also be creating class books and pupils will have the opportunity to take part in a Readathon and shared reading across year groups.

Here’s a peek at what is going to be happening throughout the week:

Meet an Author This year, we are lucky enough to have two fantastic authors coming into school to talk to and work with pupils across Key Stages 1 to 4:

Jan Latta will be joining classes in years 1 – 3 to talk about her wildlife photography and travel writing. Jan has visited many countries and photographed lots of animals in their natural habitats. Pupils will be able to enjoy her experiences and accounts of her travels.

Rob Lloyd Jones will be coming to the school to talk to pupils and lead some writing workshops for our pupils in years 4 – 11. Rob has recently had his novel, Jake Atlas and the Tomb of the Emerald Snake, a story about a young explorer and his family, released and will be coming into school to introduce pupils to his stories and share his writing expertise.

Readathon The Olympics of the reading world! Take the challenge to read as much as you can throughout the run up to Book Week. There will be prizes and rewards for achieving reading goals, whilst also having all the fun and enjoyments of getting lost in some amazing books… watch this space for more information about how to get involved.

Book Fair Shanghai Book Traders will be coming into school to lead a Book Fair, giving all members of our community the opportunity to peruse and purchase their next exciting read. The Fair will take place on the Thursday and Friday of Book Week, giving everyone ample opportunity to have a look at what will be on offer.

Dressing Up On our final day of Book Week, all of Britannica will come alive in a celebration of all of our favourite fictional characters. Parents are invited and encouraged to join us in the morning for our Character Parade, with the most interesting costumes winning prizes during our Book Week assemblies later in the day.

Photograph Competition Britannica’s Photography Competition for Book Week 2017 is in full swing. Pupils can send a photograph of themselves reading in a different or out-of-the-ordinary place! The photograph can be taken in an unusual location or on a day out. Britannica’s teachers will also be taking part! Entries to the photography competition can be sent to bookweek@britannicashanghai.com

Please note that the competition is open to all pupils and students across Britannica. We kindly ask that pupils and students ensure they have their parents’ permission to enter and a parent’s email address should be included on all entries (if not sent directly from a parent). Pupils can send as many entries as they like. All entries must be in email format and submitted no later than Friday 24th February 2017
